Oliver Bearman certainly left his mark on Formula 2 last year. His performance was so impressive that it led to his official debut in Formula 1, albeit during free practice.

Bearman feels incredibly fortunate. He got the chance to sit in an F1 car at Haas, which is no small feat. He’s also been soaking up lessons from Oscar Piastri’s excellent preparation for his debut at the highest level.

Bearman had some notable victories this year, winning feature races in Baku, Spain, and Monza. However, he had to settle for sixth place in the world championship. His first year in F2 had its shaky moments, but there were glimpses of the driver he could become.

In 2024, Bearman has his eyes set on the title in the step-up class. He’s still just 18, but he’s already dreaming of a seat in Formula 1 in 2025. But he knows that an F2 title doesn’t guarantee an immediate spot in the top class of motorsport. Oscar Piastri had to wait a year, and Bearman is prepared to do the same if necessary.

Oscar Piastri is a name that comes up a lot in Bearman’s conversations. He watched Piastri prepare meticulously for his rookie year, and he’s taking notes. “Preparation is key,” he says. “Once you join F1, you’re competing against guys with a lot of races under their belt. Being a rookie is tough.”

Bearman knows he needs to be well-prepared before starting an F1 campaign. “Ideally, that would mean more FP1s and maybe some private testing,” he told GPblog and others in Abu Dhabi. But he admits, “I don’t have any say on that.”

In the end, Bearman is just eager for more competition. He’s seen the dominance of Jos Verstappen in 2023 and he’s ready to challenge it. He’s young, he’s ambitious, and he’s ready to make his mark on the world of Formula 1.
