Max Verstappen made history this season. He won 19 races, a feat no one else has ever accomplished.

The three-time world champion was in a league of his own in 2023. But, according to Emerson Fittipaldi, there’s one driver on the current grid who could give Verstappen a run for his money.

“Verstappen is at the top of his game,” Fittipaldi told El Mundo Deportivo. “He’s got a great team and a great car.”

He’s dominating like Hamilton did at Mercedes for a few years. He’s squeezing every ounce of performance out of it. The driver, the team, the car – it’s a competitive combo. They’re at their peak right now.

But what about Alonso or Hamilton? Are they better than Verstappen? When the Spanish newspaper asked Fittipaldi, his answer was interesting. “Verstappen is fast, no doubt. But put Alonso in a Red Bull, and he’d be just as quick.”

Alonso had a solid year in 2023. He joined a new team, Aston Martin, and made quite an impact. The Spaniard managed to secure six podium finishes in the first eight Grands Prix.

By the end of the season, he’d been on the podium eight times. This impressive performance earned him fourth place in the world championship.

So, yeah, Verstappen was on fire this season. But Alonso? He wasn’t too far behind.
