Verstappen Warning: Lawson’s Bold Statement on Racing Tactics

Max Verstappen‘s next teammate will have his work cut out for him. Just ask the growing list of drivers who’ve tried – and failed – to match the four-time world champion’s pace.

Now Liam Lawson is about to step into that pressure cooker for 2025.

Former Haas F1 boss Guenther Steiner thinks the young New Zealander needs to be realistic about what he’s getting into. After all, some pretty talented drivers have already taken their shot at being Verstappen’s teammate.

Pierre Gasly couldn’t do it. Daniel Ricciardo struggled. Alex Albon had a tough time. Even Sergio Perez, despite some early success, eventually fell behind.

“If Liam tries to beat Max, good luck with that one!” Steiner said in an exclusive chat. “Nobody’s managed it yet.”

Every F1 driver dreams of becoming world champion. It’s part of their DNA. But Steiner thinks Lawson needs a different mindset if he wants to survive at Red Bull.

His advice? Accept being number two and focus on learning.

“If Liam’s smart, he’ll use this as a chance to learn and get as close to Max as possible,” Steiner explained. “That’s his only real opportunity. Trying to beat Max? It’s just not gonna happen.”

The Italian racing veteran praised Lawson’s talent and work ethic. But he’s seen this story before – talented drivers crumbling under the pressure of competing with Verstappen.

“You need to be realistic about what you can and cannot do,” Steiner said. “The guy is good and puts in a lot of effort, but he needs to go into this with clear expectations.”

For Lawson, 2025 could be the opportunity of a lifetime – if he plays it smart.
