Villeneuve Downplays Red Bull Dominance, Claims Not Mercedes’ Years

Max Verstappen won the 2023 Formula One World Championship, but former champion Jacques Villeneuve believes the gap between Verstappen’s team, Red Bull Racing, and the rest of the field is not significantly large, attributing Verstappen’s success to his relentless focus on racing.

Max Verstappen clinched the 2023 Formula One World Championship, no two ways about it. Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez were the only ones who could give him a run for his money in Red Bull Racing’s stellar season. However, Jacques Villeneuve, a former world champion, begs to differ on the perceived gap between Red Bull and the rest of the pack.

According to him, it’s not as wide as it seems. “Red Bull is not that far ahead,” he pointed out in an interview with PlanetF1. He noted that the margins by which they won their pole positions were razor-thin – a tenth, half a tenth. “So that’s not domination,” he stated emphatically.

He contrasted this with Mercedes’ reign, where they consistently outpaced everyone by a full second. And yet, he mused, nobody seemed to have a problem with that.

Villeneuve’s Take on Verstappen’s Supremacy

There’s no denying Verstappen’s exceptional talent. Yet, Villeneuve doesn’t believe he’s light years ahead of the rest of the Formula 1 grid.

He attributes Verstappen’s success to his relentless dedication to the sport. “Max makes the difference because he’s at it 24 hours a day,” Villeneuve said. He never tires, and even when he steps out of the race car, his mind is still on racing.

Villeneuve believes that if other drivers had the same level of focus as Max, they might be able to compete at his level.

In other news, Rosberg described Verstappen’s performance as ‘phenomenal’ and ‘historic’.
