Franco Colapinto is currently driving for Williams, filling in for Logan Sargeant, but he knows his time might be short as Carlos Sainz is expected to take over after eight races. The plan is for Sainz to team up with Alexander Albon at Williams. James Vowles has shared some thoughts on the future of these drivers.
James Vowles made the decision to replace Logan Sargeant after the Dutch Grand Prix. It was already known that Sainz would join Williams next season, so Colapinto understands he might only race in a few Grand Prix.
Vowles: ‘There are still spots available’
Vowles said, “As a part of the Academy, our responsibility is to work with him, with his teams around him as well, to where your future lies. And there are opportunities in other racing series. As I said, depending on how he performs, the future, to a certain extent, is in his hands. And what I mean by that is, if he performs exceptionally well, clearly he’ll remain here as a reserved driver.”
He added that no one can predict what opportunities will exist in 2025 or 2026. “So, you’re investing in someone that I think will have opportunity. And there are still seats available on the grid as well,” Vowles noted.
Vowles hopes to have Sainz in before Abu Dhabi test
After the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi, testing happens at Yas Marina Circuit. Although Sainz has a contract with Ferrari until the end of 2024, Vowles hopes to see him driving the FW46 by then. “We have to still agree terms with Ferrari. He’s under contract with Ferrari until the end of 2024. However, I hope you see him in the car in Abu Dhabi.”
Fans might wonder if this change will bring better results for Williams.
