The 2023 racing season has been a wild ride. We’ve seen some pretty significant differences between drivers from the same team. One standout example? The gap between Lewis Hamilton and George Russell during the Abu Dhabi race. Mercedes team boss, Toto Wolff, seems just as puzzled as we are about the whole thing.

In Abu Dhabi, George Russell managed to snag a spot on the podium, coming in third. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton, his teammate, ended up in ninth place. That’s a pretty big gap for two drivers in the same car. Toto Wolff, however, insists that the difference between the two isn’t as big as it seems. He shared this insight with GPblog.com and others.

Wolff points out that these differences aren’t exclusive to his team. He said, “You’ve seen it this weekend with Sainz and Leclerc, you’ve seen it with George and Lewis, Oscar and Lando, the obvious one is Perez and Verstappen.” So, it’s not just a Mercedes thing. It’s happening across the board.

According to Wolff, it all comes down to tyre grip. If you can get your tyres in a good place at the start of the weekend, you’re golden. If not, well, you’re out of luck.

But let’s not forget to give credit where it’s due. Wolff had some high praise for Max Verstappen. He said, “I think the only one this year who has understood how to drive these tyres is Max.” That’s a pretty big compliment for the Dutchman to tuck away.

Verstappen, by the way, clinched the World Championship in July. So, yeah, he’s having a pretty good year.
